Thread tax: Apparently, cats with FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) can live relatively normal and healthy lives with proper care. Since it's only spread by blood, it's usually fine for them to be with other cats (unless the FIV-positive cat is aggressive, which may make them more likely to spread FIV to other cats through bite wounds, for example).

Given that FIV is basically the cat equivalent of HIV, that's understandable; I had mistakenly thought that it was highly contagious and more likely to be fatal^note, but I was getting it mixed up with feline leukemia (FeLV).

In fact, technically "panther" can refer to any big cat species, especially if they have a dark fur color.

Thread tax: There are over 300 different types of sign language, and unfortunately, there's no "universal" sign language. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of signs for certain words are particularly common across most versions of sign language, or (since most words in sign language tend to be acting out the meaning of the word) if it's possible to get the gist of what someone is saying in, say, British Sign Language if you understand American Sign Language. I'm taking ASL next semester, so I guess I'll figure that out.
